Entebbe International Airport

Passenger’s name and destination address ought to be indicated on the luggage label. Suitcases and bags should be locked. For secured and protected baggage, a Quick-Wrap-Fly service is available at the check-in area for a fee of 30US Dollars or 110,00 Uganda shillings per wrapping.

Misconnected and lost baggage are reported to the Ground-Handling Company office at the Arrival hall, or the airline on which the passenger arrived. For items lost while at the Airport, report is made to the Aviation Security Office located on the Departures floor. Baggage Tracing office is located at the Arrivals baggage claim area, ground floor and the office operates on 24 hour basis. Passenger self-help-baggage trolleys are found in the forecourt of departure level, and baggage reclaim area on arrival.

Passenger handling staff assist the elderly and disabled. There is a Baggage Information display board at each baggage claim belt. The belt on which your arrival flight number is indicated will deliver your baggage. Contact the baggage tracing office if you cannot find your baggage.

There is a privately managed departure lounge, the Karibuni Lounge. Karibuni is a Swahili word for “welcome”. It renders world-class service in a natural setting, complete with water fountains and beautiful flora. A TV screen and the Internet service add value to the open blue-sky aesthetics, comfort and more. Invitation to the lounges is made by the airline of your choice, depending on the class of travel or your Commercial relation with it. Passengers traveling by economy can use the facility at US$45 for adults and UD$25 for children for three hours (inclusive of drinks and snacks).

The VIP lounge is a Government facility. Government officials and the diplomatic community are entitled to VIP lounge services. Prior application and clearance must be obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for special cases.

Travel to the airport in style, You can hire a self-driven or chauffeur – driven car on arrival at Entebbe or hire a taxi to your destination.

In case of taxi hire, arriving passengers are advised to look out for genuine taxi operators whose cars are clearly marked with a yellow Airport Taxi label.

Driving to and from Entebbe Airport

The Airport is connected by a forty-two kilo meters all-weather road from Kampala. Part of the road is dual carriage. The speed limit is 80 Km/h and the journey normally takes some forty minutes by car. Heavy traffic is especially experienced in the morning and in the evening hours. Plan your journey well if you have a flight or a friend to meet.

Look out for yellow-band Cars for hire. Each taxi has an identification number and inscription “AIRPORT TAXI” in black letters. Please note this number for reference in case you hire one. Vehicles park at the Arrivals (ground) level. The driver should help you load your baggage. Hiring a Taxi to Kampala costs US $40 or 100,000 Uganda Shillings.

The journey takes about 40 minutes. Car hire to any other destination is negotiable. Public transport is readily available between the airport and Kampala. Commuters operate the Airport – Entebbe Town routes. Commuters from the airport to Entebbe (Kitoro) a 4-km journey, cost approximately half a dollar or 2000 Uganda Shillings.

From Entebbe to Kampala City, the commuters charge is close to half a dollar or about UGS. 5000/= per passenger, including hand luggage. The journey takes about one hour. It is advisable to pay in Uganda currency. Make use of the Forex Bureau at the airport.

N.B: It is faster to use the Entebbe Express Highway.

Commercial banking and Bureau De Change services are available at the Departures and Arrivals level. Banks and Forex Bureau handle most convertible currencies. Although there are no currency restrictions in Uganda, hard currencies purchased from money dealers should be accompanied with an official receipt.

It is advisable to carry Traveller’s Cheques instead of large sums of cash. A few hotels and shopping points in Uganda accept credit cards.

WIFI

Liquid telecom and Airtel provide free wireless internet (WIFI), which can be accessed from various passenger movement areas within the terminal building at the Airport. On departure, wireless internet can be accessed by departing passengers and other airport users in the Check-in area, Transit Concourse, Boarding Lounges and VIP. It is also accessible in the Arrivals Hall and Meeters and Greeters Area.

Posta Uganda on 1^st floor offers photocopy, postal services and internet services.

To promote the highest standards of safety, security and service in civil aviation, UCAA maintains a dual approach while dealing with birds.

The Airport has a dedicated Bird Hazard and Wildlife Control Unit. Its primary task is to proactively ensure safety of aircraft operations, using modern
techniques for bird hazard control at airports.

These techniques conform to international conventions on migration of birds. Traditional methods of bird scare and control are also applied. CAA thus delicately balances aviation safety and the international opinion on environment conservation. Strides in Bird Hazard Control at Entebbe International Airport narrate the whole story.

Entebbe International Airport is on a peninsular surrounded by a fresh water mass – Lake Victoria. Being near the equator, the area experiences two rain maxima (April and October). These and other human activities attract both local and migratory bird species – with the latter visiting the peninsula in March and October every year.

Entebbe Peninsula is a gazetted ‘Bird Sanctuary” and host to some of the common bird species including, African fish eagles, Black kites, Marabou storks, Black headed herons, Swallows, Gulls, Terns and Egrets, among others. Air Transport is greatly threatened by the presence of birds at any airport. Airline companies can lose up to $ 10 m in replacement of a single aircraft engine after destruction by birds. In worse cases, there could be total loss of an aircraft its passengers and or cargo.

In a bid to control the presence and scare of birds, socio-ecological study was carried out in 1997. Effective bird control measures and methods have since been evolved. These include but are not limited to:

(i) Formation of a Bird Hazard and Wildlife Control Unit (BHCU) at Entebbe International Airport.
(ii) Environment Management

Entry to Entebbe International Airport’s car parking is automated, making parking at the Airport a smoother experience. At the entrance, drivers are urged to slow down, stop at the ticket dispensing machine, press a button and wait for a parking ticket (takes about 10 seconds for the ticket to be dispensed), pick the ticket and slowly approach the barrier. It is necessary to keep the ticket safely as it is required on exit (drive out).

All airside workers are obliged to wear high visibility clothing reflective jackets in particular.

All airside vehicles/equipment are required to be equipped with serviceable fire extinguisher and flashing beacons. No smoking is permitted on airside.

Television screens in the departure concourse and restaurants bring to you both local and international programmes. Cable T.V provides up to over 34 different channels.

Entebbe International Airport adopted a non-smoking policy within the terminal.
