Uganda to Host the 2027 IFATCA Global Conference
Uganda was confirmed as the host of the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA) Global Conference in 2027. The announcement was delivered on behalf of the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, by the Deputy Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Ms. Olive Birungi Lumonya, during the 36th IFATCA Africa and Middle East Regional Meeting held from November 3–5, 2025, in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
Uganda secured the hosting rights during the IFATCA Global Conference in Abu Dhabi in May 2025 and is now preparing to welcome approximately 600 delegates from 132 countries for the prestigious event. The 2027 conference is expected to position Kampala as a significant hub for global aviation discussions, professional exchange, and policy dialogue within the air traffic management community.
In her remarks, Ms. Lumonya highlighted the importance of this year’s regional meeting theme, “Policy Leadership for a Safer Sky: Advancing Strategic Human Capital Development in Air Traffic Management.” She emphasized that despite rapid advances in automation and technology, human expertise remains central to maintaining aviation safety.
“In Uganda, we continue to invest in our people through training, in modern air navigation systems, and in regional cooperation,” she noted. “We are enhancing aviation infrastructure, strengthening search and rescue capabilities, and fostering collaboration across our region.”
Gen. Katumba Wamala, who serves as the Patron of the Uganda Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (UGATCA), continues to guide the profession through insights shaped by his extensive leadership and governance experience.
For more than six decades, IFATCA has played a pivotal role in supporting air traffic controllers worldwide—championing professionalism, promoting collaboration, and ensuring safe and efficient skies. Hosting the 2027 IFATCA Global Conference further reinforces Uganda’s commitment to strengthening air navigation services and contributing to global aviation excellence.
